Every time there's a case of child molestation in the news, people ask themselves the same thing: what kind of monster hurts a kid? Who could do such a thing? Sometimes the "kid" isn't quite so young, but they're still under the age of consent. Teachers have sex with their students. Priests abuse their choirboys. Celebrities take advantage of their impressionable teenage fans. Everyone always wants to know: how can they live themselves after corrupting the innocence of young people? Recently, however, another question has come to light.

*Why* do they choose to break the law when there are so many other options available? Sadly, sex with minors is nothing new in this postmodern world of media frenzies and bad taste. Despite being a very real problem, child sexual abuse has become the punchline of jokes. Rape is forgiven if the teacher is pretty and blonde. Under the guise of free speech, everyone feels entitled to debate the concept of "consent" and what really constitutes "abuse." The public will lobby for a pedophile as long as he makes good movies.

Just turn on your TV and you're bound to find a sensationalized story about someone else having sex with a minor. Sometimes it seems like it's happening all across America. Some recent examples include:

-- Amy Beck, a 33 year old schoolteacher in Los Angeles, was sent to prison after details came to light of her seven month affair with one of her students. The boy was 14 and in sixth grade. Amy's husband was a police officer.

-- Roman Polanski pled guilty to "unlawful sexual intercourse" after he was arrested for drugging and raping a 13 year old model under his care. The case attracted international attention because of Polanski's status - he was a famous director - and because he fled the United States when faced with jail time. The case is still open and will remain so unless France decides to extradite him back to the US.

- Tony Simmons was recently convicted of sexually abusing two teenage girls aged 15-16, including groping them inappropriately and manipulating them into oral sex. He was sentenced to four years in prison with two felony counts of criminal sexual act. The kicker? He was a juvenile justice counselor.

There have even been television shows like "To Catch A Predator," which has shed new light about the growing problem of pedophiles. Show officials would enter chatrooms and pretend to be young teenagers looking for sexual encounters, and the people who "bit" - who expressed interest - would be lured to a meeting site that was actually set up with cameras and cops. To Catch A Predator shed light on sex offenders of all classes and from all backgrounds. They caught religious leaders and military men, parents and elementary school teachers. One man brought his five year old son to the meeting. One man was arrested and later revealed to be a criminal investigator himself - from the Department of Homeland Security. Dateline NBC worked hand in hand with Perverted Justice (an American organization based in California and Oregon, that investigates, identifies, and publicizes the conduct of adults who solicit online sexual conversations with adults posing as children or underage teenagers) and the local authorities in each city that they were filming and targeting people in. Louis William Conradt Jr., a 56-year-old assistant county prosecutor in a Dallas suburb, shot himself in November 2006 when officers showed up at his house as part of a pedophilia sting arranged by “Dateline.”

With sex offenders becoming so commonplace, many thought to ask *why*. Why would these otherwise respectable men sink so low as to have sex with children? What did they expect to get out of it? Children cannot consent to sex. Even disregarding the moral, ethical, and psychological issues of sex with children, they physically lack the capacity to consent. Their brains haven't developed to the point where they can weigh concepts like sexual behavior and its consequences. Even teenagers haven't fully developed this function, which is why they remain off-limits in the eyes of the law. Age limits aren't arbitrary - they're grace periods allowing their minds to catch up with the physical changes of puberty. Regardless of their bodily development, their brains literally haven't finished growing - and as such they legally can't be held responsible for themselves, not like adults. Why would anyone *want* to have sex with someone when their brains are still unformed and unfinished?

One possible reason is that they have sexual desires that don't conform to social norms. If they're gay, for example, or already married, they might be too afraid and ashamed to seek the kind of sexual gratification they require. Child sexual abuse is often a crime of opportunity. Struggling with secret needs, the offender will take advantage of someone quiet and convenient - which translates to children. The irony is that such lengths are completely unnecessary. With the prevalence of online dating sites, there are literally hundreds of foundations that cater to all imaginable sexual fantasies.

Thanks to the ease of the internet, it's possible find *anything* you're looking for in a sexual partner - no matter how unusual or unconventional. There are plenty of people already out there just waiting for someone else who shares their fantasies. Not only are they intelligent, experienced adults who are willing to consent to sex, but they're 100%. And they can provide the kind of bedroom experience that potential offenders are really seeking - with none of the risk of sex with minors.

It begs for everyone to wonder why these people are taking advantage of children, rather than their resources. These children are suffering emotional, physical, and psychological pain because of disgusting sexual fantasies and people who enjoy child pornography. The battle between law enforcement and pedophiles seems to be an ongoing and never ending battle, leaving victims in the wake of destruction.
