There are many pharmaceutical companies. My research led me to these major pharmaceutical companies and what they manufacture. At the top of the list is Johnson and Johnson. They have the highest revenue numbers of all the major pharmaceutical companies. With over 118,000 employees there’s a reason why they are ranked number one. They are also listed as a Fortune 500 company. Johnson & Johnson’s headquarters is located in Brunswick, New Jersey, with operations in over 57 countries. They manufacture a long list of commonly known medications and first aid supplies like Band-aid and Tylenol medications. Among the popular list of products they manufacture are Johnson & Johnson baby products. Clean and Clear, Acuvue contact lenses, and the Neutrogena skin care line.

The second largest pharmaceutical company is Pfizer. There revenues rank at over 50,000. They are also a Fortune 500 company. Pharmaceutical companies rate Pfizer number one in sales worldwide. Pfizer is located in New York City , with its headquarters located in Groton, Connecticut. Pharmaceutical companies like this one are important! They produce Lipitor, Lyrica, Viagra, the antibiotic Zithromax, and the anti-inflammatory known as Celebrex. In 2009, Pfizer pled guilty to fraud charges. This was the largest health care fraud case in U. S. history. This changed the public’s view of pharmaceutical companies forever. Pfzier also received the largest criminal penalty. What was their crime? Pfizer marketed four of their drugs-illegally. They are repeat offenders and this happened to be their 4th settlement in ten years.

Third largest of the pharmaceutical companies is Roche out of Switzerland. Roche has many operations world wide and belong to the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries Associations. Pharmaceutical companies can’t compete with Roche, who accidentally discovered the first anti-depressant in 1956. Because of its toxic side effects, it was removed from the shelves in the early 60’s. Roche produces Valium, Xenical, Bactrum, and Tamiflu-among others.

Among other popular pharmaceutical companies is GlaxoSmithKline. They are a British pharmaceutical and healthcare company. GSK is the second largest of all pharmaceutical companies in employee size. They offer a wide variety of pharmaceutical products and have a consumer health care operation consisting of healthcare products, over the counter medicines, and nutritional drinks. There is a long list of products that include:Advair, Boniva,Aquafresh,Nicorette,Paxil, Sensodyne, and Wellbutrin. Some more interesting information includes overcharging Medicaid for Paxil and Flonase in 2007, and owing more than 7 million dollars in back taxes to the IRS-the highest in U.S. history. Even Pharmaceutical companies can’t escape the wrath of the government.

The last of the pharmaceutical companies I would like to mention is Novartis. Novartis is located in Switzerland and is a multinational pharmaceutical company.Novartis ranks number one in revenue-over 50 billion as of 2008. Novartis also owns Sandoz- a leading manufacturer of generic drugs, Sandoz owned Gerber baby products but sold it to Nestle in 2007. Pharmaceutical companies like Sandoz continue to thrive with ongoing research. Novartis products include: Comtan, Ritalin,Tegretol,Diovan, and rotrel. Their consumer health products include: Comtrex, Bufferin, Ex-lax, Maalox, and Theraflu.There are many more pharmaceutical companies- these are the top Five Fortune 500 companies.

Pharmaceutical research can help in treat life threatening diseases. Through scientist’s hard work, pharmaceutical research can treat illnesses like cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease in the elderly. Pfizer is one leading pharmaceutical company that continues to work on the latest scientific developments that will help us prolong our lives and help those with debilitating illnesses to live quality lives. There are many Pharmaceutical Research facilities worldwide who are working together to discover innovative treatments for cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Johnson and Johnson is a Pharmaceutical Research and Development company here in the United States . Were not talking baby shampoo any more. They have walked into a whole new territory, where pharmaceutical research has made important discoveries –aiding in treatable and curable solutions for those who are suffering with many types of illness. The world is always changing, and scientists are learning of new ways to treat illnesses with drugs that can effectively improve and aid in the healing of these illnesses. We have over thousands of proteins and scientists have to locate the right target, researchers have the job of trying to find the right proteins that are causing a specific illness. Pharmaceutical research begins with comparing healthy cells with unhealthy cells like cancer cells for example. Scientists are often like detectives, trying to find out what substances affect a target. Unfortunately the only way to test these substances is by animal testing. Pharmaceutical research is not an easy task. If you’re an animal over, this wouldn’t be the job for you. After all the hours involved in pharmaceutical research, the substance can be tested on humans through clinical trials. Clinical trials can take six long years. Every state has to approve the new drug. Then health organizations have the last say for final approval on the drug. The pharmaceutical research has been completed and is now on the market. Once the medicine is on the market, the manufacturer only has around 6 years for an investment turn around or the patent will expire. The Pharmaceutical research continues to evolve in improving the drug with the least amount of side effects as possible. Despite our suffering economy, over 45 million dollars was spent on pharmaceutical research last year. Pharmaceutical research scientists still continue to try and develop new treatments and cures that will help save lives. The pharmaceutical research industry continues to thrive as one of the largest industries worldwide. More money is spent on research than actual sales as new ideas continue to change the lives of our neighbors and loved ones.
